To evaluate the frequency of patients presenting late to care within the Icona Foundation Study cohort and toe valuate their long term risk of death
The frequency of late presenters (LP) in the Icona cohort, according to differnt definitions, and their outcome was investigated. More than 60% of patients entered the cohort with CD4 <350,and 43% with CD4<=200/cmm or AIDS.Late presenters are more likely to be non-Italian, older, by homosexual route, and to have higher viral load than the average patients diagnosed around the time of inclusion in the cohort. Patients presenting late showed increased long-term risk of death compared to patients diagnosed early; patients with AIDS at HIV diagnosis were those at higher risk of death.
