New information has recently come to light on the pathogenesis of the autoimmune biliary diseases primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC) and primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC).
Genetic studies in particular have revealed insights into the pathogenesis of both diseases, and a basis for development of rational therapies. Although environmental triggers are also important they are less easily studied than genetic associations.
Dr. Hirschfield presents the latest information on pathogenesis and potential therapeutic strategies.
