Clara D. Bloomfield, M.D.
Clara D. Bloomfield, Distinguished University Professor and holder of the William Greenville Pace III Endowed Chair in Cancer Research, is Professor of Internal Medicine in the Division of Hematology and Oncology at the Ohio State University (OSU). She is the inaugural OSU Cancer Scholar and Senior Advisor to the OSU Comprehensive Cancer Center and The Arthur G James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute. Prior significant academic administrative positions include Chair of the Department of Medicine at Roswell Park Cancer Institute (1989-1997) and Director of the Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center (1997-2003).

Dr. Bloomfield is an internationally recognized clinical scientist whose three decades of groundbreaking research on adult leukemia and lymphoma, described in over 750 publications, have changed the way we think about these diseases and treat these patients. Her most important scientific contributions can be summarized as (1) showing that adult acute leukemia can be cured; (2) demonstrating that biomarkers, especially chromosomal abnormalities and more recently molecular markers, can and should be used to predict outcome and select treatment in adults with acute leukemia and lymphoma; and (3) showing biomarkers, including expression array profiles, are important to classify hematologic malignancies resulting in internationally standardized classifications for these disorders.

She has made extensive contributions to national and international professional organizations, serving on the board of directors of both the American Society of Clinical Oncology and the American Association of Cancer Research and chairing the National Cancer Institute Division of Cancer Treatment’s Board of Scientific Counselors. Dr. Bloomfield also serves on the board of directors of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network. She served as 1 of the 3 chairs of the National Cancer Institute’s Progress Review Group which outlined the national agenda for research in Leukemia, Lymphoma and Myeloma. She currently chairs the World Health Organization Clinical Advisory Committee for Neoplastic Diseases of the Hematopoietic and Lymphoid Systems and is Past-President of the Association for Patient Oriented Research. The recipient of a number of prestigious honors, Dr. Bloomfield is an elected member of the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences, and recipient of the 2004 Joseph H. Burchenal Clinical Research Award of the American Association for Cancer Research and the 2006 American Society of Clinical Oncology Distinguished Service Award for Scientific Achievement.
