Graduated from Portsmouth Polytechnic and subsequently gained a PhD from the University of Southampton in 1980. Following post-doctoral postions in Exeter and Manchester, moved to the Beatson Institute for Cancer Research in Glasgow in 1984, which was then followed by further research at the LRF Laboratories at Glasgow Royal Infirmary. In 1992, moved to Cardiff to Haematology at the University of Wales College of Medicine. Recently, appointed as the chair of Experimental of Haematology at the CCRCB within Queens University Belfast.
