Introduction: Most women regard sexuality as an important part of life but a decline in sexual activity with age is being observed. The decrease in estrogen levels after menopause can cause vaginal atrophy symptoms (vaginal dryness, vaginal soreness, dysuria, increased vaginal discharge, vaginal infections, recurrent urinary tract infections, dyspareunia and vaginal bleeding associated with sexual activity) that negatively affect the well-being and quality of life of postmenopausal women.
Objective: To understand 1) how menopause affects women suffering from vaginal atrophy in their physical and emotional relationships with their partners 2) how to encourage a positive dialogue between women and their partners.
Design: The total sample for this project consists of 8,200 respondents divided evenly between women and partners. 4100 postmenopausal women, aged 55-65 (55-59 and 60-65) years who suffer from vaginal atrophy, were invited to complete an online survey in Denmark, Finland, Norway, Sweden, Italy, France, UK, Canada and the US. Women were married or co-habiting and their last menstrual period was, at least, one year ago. Once women have finished completing the survey, they were instructed to ask their partners to fill out the partner’s questionnaire. Two questionnaires including 10 questions plus demographics were designed to allow comparisons between the two groups with a 95 CI. Global and country-specific data to highlight differences and similarities between women and their partners will be presented at the 9th European Menopause and Andropause Society meeting.
