Aim: To assess the impact of a moderate physical exercise programme on the Quality of Life (QoL) of patients with treatment-resistant Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) and evaluate the relationship between QoL and response to treatment.
Conclusions: Our results suggest that physical exercise can be used as an effective therapy, adjuvant to pharmacological therapy, in treatment-resistant MDD, contributing to the improvement of QoL in these patients. There is a relationship between symptom severity and QoL, with remitted patients achieving QoL scores comparable to a healthy population, while patients that only responded without remitting maintain some QoL impairment. These results highlight the importance of achieving remission free from residual symptoms, so that a true state of health, similar to the general population, can be reached.
