Professor Piero Sismondi has participated in several Randomized Clinical Trials on pelvic and breast cancer treatment. He has directed the Torino's Operative Unit of the Multicentric Study on Endometrial Cancer supported by the CNR during the years 1979-83 and the Torino's Operative Unit of the project "Oncologia" on Neoplastic Growth Control during the years 1984-1988. He has been the chairman of the Italian group in the co-operative international project CNR/INSERM, evaluating complications and cost-benefits in patients treated for cervical cancer.
He has been involved in several research projects investigating the clinical relevance of tissue and serum prognostic markers in the management of breast cancer. In the frame of the G.R.O.C.T.A. collaborative group, he contributed to the design and accomplishment of several clinical randomised trials of chemotherapy and hormonotherapy as adjuvant treatments for breast cancer, focusing on the role of oestrogen receptors as predictor of response to hormonal treatments. He participated in several biological studies investigating the role of prognostic markers such as oncogenes (c-erbB-2, myc, ras and RON), tumour-suppressor genes (p53 and BRCA1), membrane receptors (EGF-R), cytosol components (PSA, pepsinogen C, CK BB) and serum markers (IGF-I , ca 15.3, TPS).
He has developed a special interest in the relationships between hormonal influences and breast cancer risk and he is involved in several biological and clinical studies concerning the safety of hormonal replacement therapy in breast cancer survivors. He is a member of the international advisory board of the largest study ever conducted on the treatment of menopause-related disorders in breast cancer patients (Liberate trial).
